F1, F1b, & Ultra Bernedoodles: Understanding the Differences
If you’ve been researching Bernedoodles, you’ve likely come across terms like F1, F1b, and Ultra Bernedoodles. But what do these mean, and how do they affect a Bernedoodle’s coat, temperament, and allergy-friendliness? In this guide, we’ll break down the key differences to help you choose the right doodle for your family.
What Is an F1 Bernedoodle?
An F1 Bernedoodle is a first-generation cross between a purebred Bernese Mountain Dog and a purebred Poodle (usually a Standard Poodle). This 50/50 mix results in a variety of coat types, including:
Wavy coat Bernedoodles – The most common coat type, with loose waves that shed minimally.
Straight coat Bernedoodles – Resembling the Bernese parent, these may shed more.
Curly coat Bernedoodles – Less common in F1s, but more hypoallergenic when present.
Pros of F1 Bernedoodles:
✔️ Strong hybrid vigor (health benefits from first-generation crossbreeding)
✔️ Beautiful, fluffy coats with a mix of traits
✔️ Balanced temperament (gentle yet playful)
Cons of F1 Bernedoodles:
❌ Coat type is less predictable (some may shed more)
❌ Not always the best choice for allergy sufferers
An F1b Bernedoodle is a backcross, meaning an F1 Bernedoodle is bred back to a Poodle. This results in a dog that is 75% Poodle and 25% Bernese Mountain Dog. Because of the higher Poodle percentage, F1b Bernedoodles are known for their:
Curly coat Bernedoodles – The most common type, ideal for allergy sufferers.
Wavy coat Bernedoodles – Occasionally present, but typically still lower shedding.
Pros of F1b Bernedoodles:
✔️ Highly hypoallergenic (great for allergy-sensitive families)
✔️ Minimal shedding
✔️ Intelligent and trainable (Poodles are one of the smartest breeds)
Cons of F1b Bernedoodles:
❌ Less hybrid vigor than F1 Bernedoodles
❌ Requires frequent grooming due to curlier coats
The Ultra Bernedoodle is a multi-generational Bernedoodle, meaning it has been bred from two Bernedoodle parents rather than a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. These dogs are specifically bred for their coat type, temperament, and hypoallergenic qualities.
Common Traits of Ultra Bernedoodles:
✔️ More predictable coats (wavy or curly, but rarely straight)
✔️ Even better for allergy sufferers
✔️ Consistent temperament – affectionate, intelligent, and social
Potential Drawbacks of Ultra Bernedoodles:
❌ Less genetic diversity than an F1 Bernedoodle
❌ Coat requires regular maintenance
If you love the classic Bernedoodle look and don’t have severe allergies → F1 Bernedoodle
If you need a low-shedding, hypoallergenic dog → F1b Bernedoodle
If you want a predictable coat and temperament → Ultra Bernedoodle
No matter which generation you choose, Bernedoodles are loving, intelligent companions that bring joy to their families. Whether you prefer a wavy coat Bernedoodle for a fluffier look or a curly coat Bernedoodle for allergy-friendly cuddles, these dogs are truly special!
